Charismatic Counselor Battles the Dark Side of Growing Up in “The Street Shrink Chronicles”

Drugs, violence, prostitution and family breakups are just the tip of the iceberg in the hard business of life on the street for kids who fall through the system

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) November 22, 2010 Kids – out on the streets and on their own, struggling with drug addictions, predatory adults, suicide, petty crime and bleak futures – meet the man who is either their greatest friend or worst nightmare in Jason Wittman’s new work of autobiographical fiction, The Street Shrink Chronicles, (ISBN 978-1456316648, Artful Graphics Press, 2010).

Jamie’s got a gun and friends are afraid he’s going to blow away his parents and then use it on himself. Young Billy tells a shocking tale of sexual slavery and murder, reaching deep into the city’s hierarchy. Teenage Doug struggles to keep his younger brothers and sisters together, out of the clutches of an alcoholic mother and her abusive boyfriend.

Street shrink Jason helps all these kids as well as many others, using his unique brand of street smarts and tough love to cut through the bull, of which there is plenty. Working with his concerned counterparts on the police force and in Child Protective Services, Jason is more than a counselor – he’s a critical ingredient in a city’s ability to fight the crimes that plague its edgy youth.

Loosely based on Wittman’s 35 years of real-life experiences in working with kids who live on the streets by their wits, The Street Shrink Chronicles opens a window on a world most of us see only fleetingly in our rearview mirrors, if at all. Not only does the reader gain a deeper understanding of the problems facing today’s at-risk youth, but the method Wittman employs – explaining to the reader the reasoning underlying many of his words and actions in the book – allows for some remarkable insight into the work he does with kids like these.

Jason Wittman, M.P.S., received his master’s degree in counseling psychology from Cornell University. While still a grad student, he founded and ran a residential drug rehab and then his first street program for high-risk teens in Ithaca, New York. Since then, he has directed youth programs in Tucson and Phoenix, Arizona, and, for the last fifteen years, L.A. Youth Supportive Services in Hollywood, CA (la-youth.org).

He has raised thirteen foster teens and has an adopted son. Wittman also conducts a private practice as a life and mentor coach to parents of teens and young adults. He regularly speaks to parents’ groups on teen issues and effective parenting of teens, and is the author of the forthcoming non-fiction book, Parenting by Permission. The Street Shrink Chronicles is his first novel.

The Street Shrink Chronicles (ISBN 978-1456316648 Artful Graphics Press) is available in paperback at online and local bookstores, including amazon.com and createspace.com. A Kindle e-book version is also available at Amazon’s Kindle store.
